Knowing almost nothing about homegrown veg and noticing that the leaves of the carrots Sophia had planted from seeds at preschool were fairly tall, I asked her teacher how I'd know when they were ready. She advised I dig away the dirt at the top of the carrot to check its diameter, mentioning when the leaves were about the size of the carrot below, we might have a decent baby carrot ready to eat. She warned that flies can eat holes in the carrot while it's still in the dirt, so with that in mind, and not being able to tell how long this carrot was after checking the top, I decided to pull it out. Disappointingly it was only 1.5 inches (about 4 cm) long, but Sophia enjoyed eating it. We're going to let the others keep growing.
Carrots still growing in our flower box
No cherry tomatoes yet

Betsy, I'm trying my hand in "gardening" - I've got a tomato plant, basil, and lettuce in containers. Nothing growing yet! Eeeek. I've also got herb plants trying to grow in a windowsill thing. We'll see if I have a green thumb. I doubt it, haha.
